Nick Stein is a fine-art macro photographer based in Waynesville, North Carolina. His work explores the small, often overlooked lives and textures of the Southern Appalachians—insects, spiders, amphibians, fungi, moss, and botanicals.
Working with extreme magnification and carefully controlled light, he photographs familiar subjects until they become unfamiliar. The resulting images balance natural detail with an atmosphere that can be intimate, theatrical, or quietly unsettling.
